Our Mission
Our mission at the Cane Corso Association if California is to promote and preserve the Cane Corso breed while fostering a community of passionate and responsible Cane Corso owners. We strive to educate the public about the breed's history, characteristics, and responsible ownership practices, including breeding, training, and socialization. Our club encourages and supports the responsible breeding and showing of Cane Corsos, as well as participation in events and activities that showcase the breed's working abilities, such as obedience, agility, and protection sports. We are committed to upholding the breed standard and promoting the health and well-being of the Cane Corso, while also emphasizing the importance of responsible dog ownership and advocating for the welfare of all dogs.
THE CANE CORSO
The Cane Corso is a highly intelligent and trainable breed with a confident and assertive personality. Originating from ancient Rome, their name roughly translates to "bodyguard dog." They are large, muscular dogs, standing at nearly 28 inches tall and weighing over 100 pounds, with a short, stiff coat and an alert expression that can be intimidating to intruders. Their calm and competent demeanor is a defining characteristic, much like that of a professional bodyguard. While they are fiercely loyal and eager to please their owners, they can also be willful and assertive, potentially becoming too dominant if not properly trained and socialized from an early age. It is important to breed these dogs responsibly and expose them to social situations with people and other dogs to prevent any negative behaviors.
BREED HISTORY
The Cane Corso is an ancient Italian breed that has a rich history dating back to the Roman Empire. It is believed that the Cane Corso descends from the Roman Molossian dogs, which were large, powerful dogs used in battles and as guardians. The Cane Corso's ancestors were used for a variety of purposes, such as hunting, guarding property, and protecting livestock.
Over time, the Cane Corso evolved to become a more refined breed, used primarily as a guardian and protector of people and property. The breed's popularity began to decline in the 20th century due to the rise of industrialization and urbanization, leading to a decline in the need for large guardian dogs.
However, in the 1970s, a group of Italian dog enthusiasts began a breeding program aimed at preserving the Cane Corso breed. These efforts were successful, and the breed was officially recognized by the Italian Kennel Club in 1994.
Today, the Cane Corso is a popular breed worldwide and is known for its loyalty, intelligence, and protective instincts. It is often used as a guard dog, working dog, and family companion.
